I recently had the honour of being interviewed on ABC Radio Sydney for a segment on why we love to return to and reimagine the Victorian era. I joined ABC Evenings host Sarah Macdonald to chat about some of the many reasons why the Victorian era – and the nineteenth-century more broadly – is such a continued fascination for audiences and the creators of popular television, films, literature and other media. This interview followed an article I wrote recently for Macquarie University’s The Lighthouse magazine, and it was so much fun to discuss this fascinating subject on radio. From penny-farthings to Penny Dreadful, and with a good dose of fairies, ghosts and the Gothic, I hope you enjoy listening to this interview, excerpted and edited here from the full episode aired on 13 July 2021.
