Art and Illustration Online Shop News Creative Writing Photography Research Personal Thoughts |

IMPORTANT: Due to the pressures of finishing my PhD requirements over the next few months, I’ve decided to partially close my online store. This means that most products are unavailable, with the exception of those already in stock and ready to ship out. Still available are Original Artworks, Greeting Cards, Bookmarks, Buttons and the complete Fairy Inspirations CD range. To make it easier, I’ve included links to all of these at the top of the website pages. I will also be updating my Etsy store with new stock from time to time, so the usual range will occasionally be available there too. Now – back to work for me!
Peace and love,
~ Kirstin

For those who love to recreate beautiful fantasy worlds in thread, my popular new miniature dragon painting ‘The Key’ is available now at Heaven and Earth Designs as one of their beautifully detailed cross-stitch patterns: ‘The Key’ by Kirstin Mills at Heaven and Earth Designs.

The new Apple iPhone 4 has just been released in Australia, much to the excitement of many people, including myself. I have resisted buying an iPhone since they were introduced, managing instead with a very old Nokia (I could throw it at a brick wall and it would survive – quite necessary with my occasional bouts of butterfingers!), an iPod touch and a camera all in my bag together (yes, I’m one of those people that has a ridiculously full and inexplicably heavy handbag). But seeing what they’ve done with the new iPhone and finally seeing the signs of degradation on my trusty Nokia (hey, how would you feel slamming into brick walls?!) I felt like it was finally time to upgrade. But…there was one problem.
The first iPhone releases in Australia were in very short supply – on the day of release, many MANY people were turned away empty-handed. But, LUCKILY for me, a friend was in the position to help me get my hands on one! So now I am the proud owner of a brand-spanking new iPhone 4 (and my handbag is considerably lighter, thank you very much)! Whatever problems were rumoured to exist are not happening on my phone, so I’m not sure what the problem was supposed to be there – I love it! Considerably excited about finally having my very own iPhone (and an amazing one at that!), I needed a way to say thank you to the person who hooked it all up for me. But how do you express thanks to a Machead who has everything (except an iPhone 4 – haha sorry Ja!)? Well, obviously, you make them an iPhone 4 cake!
I was excited about making this as soon as the idea came to me and I was quite happy with how it turned out. The cake (actually one large brownie) was a chocolate brownie base, iced with chocolate icing and then topped with piped icing and marzipan apps painted with food colouring. This was so fun to make! Since I haven’t been able to paint for a while, this was as close as I could get and I loved it! See the photos of the iPhone cake below.

This morning I woke up to a silvery, glittering frost that had settled over everything outside like a crystal blanket…beautiful! I’m supposed to be getting ready for the upcoming Winterfest Medieval Fair, at which I will have a stall with my art and gifts, but I couldn’t resist jumping out into the cold air to capture some shots! I have a new painting to share: an artwork created as part of the ‘Enchanted Visions’ Art project begun by Amy Brown and Jessica Galbreth where many artists create an artwork based upon a shared title. This month’s title was ‘The Key’ and my own interpretation features one of my miniature dragons entwined around an ancient key on a shady garden wall. This one was created with watercolour, acrylics and pencil on paper. Unfortunately it did not scan in as well as I had hoped: there seems to be something about my scanner and artworks that incorporate pencil where the digital version loses all the softness and subtlety of the original painting and comes out looking quite stark and grainy in comparison. I’ve done what I can to correct this in Photoshop but the difference is still marked. Perhaps a new scanner is in order? Or perhaps in reality, it is long overdue! Anyway, without further ado, here is my latest painting:
